Best Starter Tier 2 Small and Medium Garrison Buildings To Make Gold?
I finally got my first Tier 2 Garrison in Warlords of Draenor and I now have the question that many of you have had to answer: which starter medium and and small building should I build in Tier 2?
In my post Details On All Twenty Garrison Buildings In The Warlords Beta I outlined what the buildings were at the time. For my initial thoughts on the beta buildings go back and read that post. In this post I hope to think out loud a bit about the possible choices for small and medium buildings at Tier 2.
Medium Building Ideas
For medium buildings our options are:- Barn
- Level 1: Allows you to capture clefthoof, elekk, wolves, and talbuk for leather and fur. Used for leatherworking and tailoring recipes.
- Gladiator's Sanctum
- Level 1: Increases your out-of-combat regeneration in outdoor Draenor zones and allows the collection of broken bones from defeated enemy players (used for Conqueror's Tribute).
- Lumber Mill
- Level 1: Allows you to mark small trees in Draenor for harvest. Harvested Timber can be converted to work orders for garrison supplies.
- Lunarfall Inn / Frostwall Tavern
- Level 1: Each day, a visitor offering a dungeon quest with generous rewards will spend the day at your inn.
- Trading Post
- Level 1: A merchant shows up each day selling trade goods. Also allows the trade of crafting reagents for garrison resources.
The Barn seems like it's for mount collectors (maybe build, get mounts then rebuild another building?).
The Gladiator's Sanctumc seems focused on PVP. Not my cup of gold-making tea.
The Lumber Mill is interesting in that it seems to help you get Garrison Supplies faster which could be beneficial if Garrison Supplies help make other stuff that makes gold faster.
The Inns seem good if more followers and/or follower quests end up being important.
Going by gut instinct alone the Trading Post seems pretty nice (although time will tell how useful it will intimately end up being). Of course it could just be that the description sounds a lot like what we do as gold-makers.
Final verdict for my first Tier 2 Medium building? I'm going to give the Trading Post a shot. We'll see if it ends up being worth while. Things like this can be deceiving.
Small Building Ideas
Small building fall into two general categories: profession and utility.Professions small buildings:
- Alchemy Lab
- Level 1: Allows the production of Alchemy items and work orders.
- Enchanter's Study
- Level 1: Allows the production of Enchanting items and allows non-Enchanters to disenchant items. Also allows work orders.
- Engineering Works
- Level 1: Allows the production of Engineering items and work orders.
- Gem Boutique
- Level 1: Allows the production of Jewelcrafting items and work orders.
- Scribe's Quarters
- Level 1: Allows the production of Inscription items and work orders.
- Tailoring Emporium
- Level 1: Allows the production of Tailoring items and work orders.
- The Forge
- Level 1: Allows the production of Blacksmithing items and work orders.
- The Tannery
- Level 1: Allows the production of Leatherworking items and work orders.
Utility:
- Salvage Yard
- Level 1: Allows Salvage to be occasionally recovered from missions. (Note: Plans for this are required and I'm not sure where to get them yet. #noob)
- Storehouse
- Level 1: Enables access to your personal bank and increases the total number of active work orders for all buildings by 5.
Small Profession Buildings
So for the small buildings I already chose a Scribe's Quarters (my character has maxed Inscription and Alchemy). That leaves me with one small slot.As for the profession specific small sbuildings I'm not yet sure how much utility they provide for those without the profession. Us gold-makers tend to have all of the profession covered and I still need to learn what benefit the buildings have to those who actually have the professions.
Just glancing down the list depending on how valuable enchanting mats are right here at the beginning of the expansion I think the Enchanter's Study offers a interesting utility in that you can disenchant items (like all those blues and purples the rare's drop).
Obviously this wouldn't be useful if you already had enchanting but could be a good way to do something other then vendor BOP items.
Update: After building the Enchanter's Study and trying to DE pre-WoD items it gives you a "Your enchanting skill is not high enough to disenchant that" error even thought it will DE WoD items (which are clearly higher than pre-WoD items). WoD items DE just fine so far. Also it seems epic WoD items can't be disenchanted, just WoD greens and blues.
The rest of the professions don't really jump out at me. Again this is very early and I'm still learning so I could be wrong about this.
Small Utility Buildings
The Salvage Yard seems interesting if I can get a good idea on how useful Salvage is (and *what* it is). With the ability to get to your own bank I think the Storehouse will be a popular choice for many "normal" (non-gold-making) players. My wife built one and was excited to tell me she had access to her bank at her Garrison.
Other than the utility of having your bank near it also gives more work orders which could be beneficial if they are a choke point for any gold-making activities (of which I know none at the moment).
I think most of us gold-makers might be able to find creative ways to get to our personal banks but perhaps heavy gatherers will like being able to drop their mats off at the bank.
Although if you mainly store items in guild banks the guild perk Mobile Banking most likely has you covered. Also Engineers can drop a Jeeves to gain access to their banks and goblins have the Pack Hobgoblin.
Again Storehouse might be one of those buildings that seems useful at first but ultimately isn't.
Final verdict for my first Tier 2 small building? I think I'm going to go with the Enchanter's Study just to get an idea for how the disenchanting works. It will also give me an idea on how useful profession buildings of the characters non-profession will be.
Conclusion
So there are a few of my initial thoughts and choices for what buildings I'm going to try. I'm very certain that there are many of you out there who have your own ideas about which first Tier 2 Small and Medium buildings are the best to build.I also think that these choices are going to be very personal. At least while we are just learning. I'm sure at some point in the future there will be some consensus on the best way to "min/max" all of your Garrison buildings for the best gold-making.
I kind of hope, like glyphs, Blizzard has made it so that you at least have *some* individual choice for Garrison buildings and we don't end up in a "every raider is a Leatherworker" situation we had in TBC due to Leatherworking drom's strength.
I actually hope Blizzard pulls it off where we are able to make "meaningful choices" and not just go with the "flavor of the month" Garrision building choices (although I fully expect those to pop up.)
What are your choices for your first Tier 2 Small and Medium Garrison buildings? Let us know on this post in the subreddit.
