The Nostalgia Bomb That Is World of Warcraft Classic

World of Warcraft: Classic

Who knew that nostalgia could be such a strong thing? Who would have thought that the thing that could get me back interested in World of Warcraft would be playing the game like it was 2004? Apparently Blizzard did because I played the World of Warcraft Classic stress test and I have to admit I'm kind of in love.

Read on for my initial thoughts after 7 hours of Classic and a bit about what I've been up to over the last few years.

World of Warcraft Classic

World of Warcraft Classic? What can I say? I love it! My wife April and I played a hunter and a warlock and even though it took us 7 hours to get to level 10 and even though we died, a lot, and had trolls chasing us around and wendigos bashing our brains in we loved it.

Leveled to 10 in 1hr and 31 minutes on live. Classic took 7+ hours.

I think there is something to say for the raw simplicity of something like the raw 2004-style Vanilla World of Warcraft. Playing Classic just drives home not only how much World of Warcraft has changed but also the things that have been lost in the process of smoothing out all the rough edges in the game over the last 15 years.

It could also be that as a father of four wonderful children (all age 5 and under) that if I have to choose between playing Battle for Azeroth where I feel left-behind or Classic where I can feel like I can comprehend all the things I can do and simply log in and "level" and "grind" and work my way up the levels. I think that then way I'm feeling these days that I would rather choose Classic. Actually I know I would choose Classic with all its rough edges and warts and all.

Who knows how long this feeling will last. Maybe it will be a passing fad but maybe it will get me to keep my subscription active.

I was logging in today to save my character names and I it looked like there were 11 servers set up. While I don't know if there are going to be more added I kind of like the idea of having the old server set up where you can only have characters on one side and you will see the same people on the server day in and day out. Maybe even add some people to your friends list and run some dungeons together.

Imagine that! Being social in a Massively Multi-Player Online Role-Playing Game! Who would have thought!

As someone who actually played in Vanilla (well actually only up to 35 until TBC coming and then I got to 58) I have to say that I wonder how many people playing in Classic actually played in Vanilla. I guess it doesn't really matter. If I had started playing after Vanilla I may be curious what Vanilla was like.

Classic Gold-Making?

So what will gold-making in Classic be like? Well if you made gold in Vanilla or TBC or even Wrath of the Lich King, basically if you made gold before things like transmogrification and merged realms then I think it will be a lot like that.

Of course gold-making has come a long way and I will be interested to see how all of our more modern gold-making ideas and tools will transfer (if at all) to Classic.

Someone on my recent livestream told me about the website WillItClassic.com that has information on which addons will work in Classic. While I don't know  if  TradeSkillMaster will work I've heard that Auctionator and the granddaddy of all gold-making addons Auctioneer will work with classic.
I kind of want to play the game without addons but I'm sure that I'll get to the point where I'll want to use some addons. The pull of "pure" nostalgia vs. the pull of more modern quality-of-life addons will be interesting.

General WoW and Gold-Making

One of the things I told myself about when I was considering writing on The Power Word: Gold blog again was that I wouldn't limit myself to gold-making content only.

I have lots of things about World of Warcraft in general that I would like to write about and with the Classic version launching soon I also have lots of "back in my day" and "uphill both ways" types of stories that I would like to tell.

In addition while working in the game development industry I happened to work with many of the people who worked on the original World of Warcraft and I would like to tell some of those stories at some point.

So if you're willing to indulge me a bit I think you'll enjoy reading what I have to say and I can tell you that I will certainly like writing it.

I'm sure there will be some gold-making content. I mean it is what I've written about for the last 8 years (give or take).

 Housekeeping

A bit of housekeeping. The following is a list of things that changes on Power Word: Gold

Things Gone:
- The blog url is now http://powerwordgold.blogspot.com/ (I no longer own or use the powerwordgold.net domain.)
- Twitter - Account gone. No longer using.
- Facebook Page - Page gone. No longer using.
- YouTube - The old PW:G YouTube account is gone. All videos deleted. (New channel is here but no videos yet.)
- All other Power Word: Gold Blogs are now gone with the exception of The Hatchery which is still around but hasn't been updated. Want to write for it?

Things on Hiatus
- The Power Word: Gold Podcast is currently on hiatus could come back sometime.
- YouTube. While I deleted my old channel along with all the videos if I do put something on YouTube you can find it on this channel. I'm not sure how much I will add but if I do that's where it will go.

Things I Plan To Keep Active
-  The blog should be updated somewhat regularly. While I still intend to have gold-making content there will also be a good amount of non-making World of Warcraft content as well. I think the addition of Classic should bring lots of interesting things to write about in both gold-making and non-gold-making areas.
- Twitch. I still have my twitch channel although the name has changed to iiimjiiim. It's the same channel as before so if you subscribed before it you should still be. While I plan on streaming a good amount of World of Warcraft don't be surprised if you see me streaming some Xbox One or PS4.

Directory Updated

I went ahead and updated The World of Warcraft Gold Blog Directory. I am the only currently active gold-making blog that I know of. If you are aware of other active WoW gold-making blogs please send me a link at powerwordgold@gmail.com or comment below and I'll work on adding them to the Directory.
