Planning Out 22 New Profession Slots
My realm was connected to another on Monday and, besides the server "holy wars" going on in trade chat, the world has not ended.
After doing my normal gold-making routine (I'm not changing any prices until a week after the connection) I decided to create 11 new characters on the new realm.
11 new characters means 22 new profession slots. But which do I choose and where do I put them? Read on for some of my initial thoughts.
Initial Considerations
Below are some of the things I'll be considering while planning the my profession choices.
- What professions I already have on my main server.
- What professions I still need on the Horde (I only had 3 characters on the Horde side up until now).
- What professions have the best cooldowns.
- What profession cooldowns are easiest to do.
- What professions coodowns have good revenue potential.
- Maintaining a diversity of professions to better capitalize on changes in the game.
The Current Landscape
In the post My Current Gold-Making Roster Of Characters I outlined what professions I currently have.
In Perfect Professions By The Numbers I theorized about which professions I would choose in a theoretical "clean slate" scenario. (Of course that post was from Cataclysm and professions have changed since then, especially in their cooldowns.)
I currently have all the professions covered on the Alliance side on 8 characters. I only have 3 characters on the Horde so I'll start by filling professions out there.
For my 11 new characters I decided to make 8 Horde and 3 Alliance (the opposite of my current set up) characters. When done I'll end up with 11 Horde and 11 Alliance. Ah. Symmetry.
The Lineup
Below are my current and new characters along with their current professions. (We'll be adding to this chart as we go through the process.)
Server | Faction | Class | Prof 1 | Prof 2 |
Main | Horde | Paladin | Tailoring | Mining |
Main | Horde | Rogue | Engineering | Enchanting |
Main | Horde | Monk | Alchemy | Herbalism |
Main | Alliance | Warrior | Jewelcrafting | Blacksmithing |
Main | Alliance | Priest | Enchanting | Leatherworking |
Main | Alliance | Shaman | Enchanting | Leatherworking |
Main | Alliance | Mage | Tailoring | Alchemy |
Main | Alliance | Druid | Alchemy | Herbalism |
Main | Alliance | Death Knight | Enchanting | Inscription |
Main | Alliance | Hunter | Engineering | Mining |
Main | Alliance | Warlock | Inscription | Alchemy |
New | Horde | Warrior | ||
New | Horde | Rogue | ||
New | Horde | Priest | ||
New | Horde | Shaman | ||
New | Horde | Mage | ||
New | Horde | Monk | ||
New | Horde | Druid | ||
New | Horde | Death Knight | ||
New | Alliance | Paladin | ||
New | Alliance | Hunter | ||
New | Alliance | Warlock |
Completing The Horde
The first order of business is to make sure I have all professions covered on the Horde side. Let's do that now.
Server | Faction | Class | Prof 1 | Prof 2 |
Main | Horde | Paladin | Tailoring | Mining |
Main | Horde | Rogue | Engineering | Enchanting |
Main | Horde | Monk | Alchemy | Herbalism |
New | Horde | Warrior | ||
New | Horde | Rogue | ||
New | Horde | Priest | ||
New | Horde | Shaman | ||
New | Horde | Mage | ||
New | Horde | Monk | ||
New | Horde | Druid | ||
New | Horde | Death Knight |
Lets start by filling in professions until we have all 11 covered on the Horde side. (New professions are indicated with an "*".)
We're also taking into consideration, where applicable, any class or race advantage for a profession (mount speed for gathering or Tauren Herbalists as an example.)
Server | Faction | Class | Prof 1 | Prof 2 |
Main | Horde | Paladin | Tailoring | Mining |
Main | Horde | Rogue | Engineering | Enchanting |
Main | Horde | Monk | Alchemy | Herbalism |
New | Horde | Warrior | Blacksmithing*
New | Horde | Rogue | Leatherworking*
New | Horde | Priest | Inscription*
New | Horde | Shaman | Skinning*
New | Horde | Mage | Jewelcrating*
New | Horde | Monk | ||
New | Horde | Druid | ||
New | Horde | Death Knight |
Above we've added 5 professions which brings us up to 11. One of every profession. This leaves us with 11 open profession slots.
Let's start filling in duplicate professions.
My gut tells me that I want at least 2 more Alchemists and 2 more Engineers. (Extra Alchemists are almost standard for my extra professions slots. The extra engineers are added due to the strength of building multiple Sky Golem mounts and the new Engineering pets Rascal-Bot and Pierre.)
Server | Faction | Class | Prof 1 | Prof 2 |
Main | Horde | Paladin | Tailoring | Mining |
Main | Horde | Rogue | Engineering | Enchanting |
Main | Horde | Monk | Alchemy | Herbalism |
New | Horde | Warrior | Blacksmithing* | Jewelcrafting* |
New | Horde | Rogue | Leatherworking* | Alchemy* |
New | Horde | Priest | Inscription* | Tailoring* |
New | Horde | Shaman | Skinning* | Leatherworking* |
New | Horde | Mage | Jewelcrating* | Enchanting* |
New | Horde | Monk | Engineering* | Alchemy* |
New | Horde | Druid | Engineering* | Alchemy* |
New | Horde | Death Knight | Mining* | Herbalism* |
Besides more Alchemists and Engineers I added dual gatherering on my Death Knight. I like Death Knights for gathering due to their mount speed increase.
Beyond that I added in a couple extra copies of Jewelcrafting, Tailoring and Enchanting to fill things out.
(Once you get past the original 11 professions and the obligatory extra Alchemists the rest becomes more of an art than a science.)
Finishing The Alliance
Below is my current Alliance roster including the new characters I am planning to assign professions to.
Server | Faction | Class | Prof 1 | Prof 2 |
Main | Alliance | Warrior | Jewelcrafting | Blacksmithing |
Main | Alliance | Priest | Enchanting | Leatherworking |
Main | Alliance | Shaman | Enchanting | Leatherworking |
Main | Alliance | Mage | Tailoring | Alchemy |
Main | Alliance | Druid | Alchemy | Herbalism |
Main | Alliance | Death Knight | Enchanting | Inscription |
Main | Alliance | Hunter | Engineering | Mining |
Main | Alliance | Warlock | Inscription | Alchemy |
New | Alliance | Paladin | ||
New | Alliance | Hunter | ||
New | Alliance | Warlock |
Assigning additional professions to my much more established (and well-oiled) Alliance gold-making machine will be quite interesting because, besides Skinning, I already have every profession I need.
Here is what I chose for my new Alliance characters. (New professions indicated by "*".)
Server | Faction | Class | Prof 1 | Prof 2 |
Main | Alliance | Warrior | Jewelcrafting | Blacksmithing |
Main | Alliance | Priest | Enchanting | Leatherworking |
Main | Alliance | Shaman | Enchanting | Leatherworking |
Main | Alliance | Mage | Tailoring | Alchemy |
Main | Alliance | Druid | Alchemy | Herbalism |
Main | Alliance | Death Knight | Enchanting | Inscription |
Main | Alliance | Hunter | Engineering | Mining |
Main | Alliance | Warlock | Inscription | Alchemy |
New | Alliance | Paladin | Mining* | Herbalism* |
New | Alliance | Hunter | Skinning* | Engineering* |
New | Alliance | Warlock | Jewelcrafting* | Tailoring* |
Since my current herbalist and miner are two separate characters I assigned my new paladin to be a dual gatherer (Mining and Herbalism). (Again the mount speed increase of the paladin come into play here.)
A hunter seemed like a nice fit for my missing skinner and I decided to throw Engineering on them as well (mainly because my main Hunter also has engineering and...tradition).
The last toon, a Warlock, got Jewelcrafting and Tailoring simply because I didn't have second copies of those yet on the Alliance and those professions feel "Warlock-y".
The Math
Where does all of this leave me if I do actually level up all 11 characters and maximize their professions?
In the chart below you can see the numbers of a professions I had before in blue and the profession additions in rad.
From a quick glance at the chart you can see that with 7 copies Alchemists are by far the most numerous profession I have.
(Maybe it's how easy Alchemy is to level. Maybe it's the power of the cooldowns or their ease of use. Whatever the reason, I have a lot of Alchemists.)
The next highest are Enchanting and Engineering with 5 copies each. Engineering has really become quite strong in my mind with the new mount and pets mentioned above.
Rounding out the long middle section are Herbalism, Inscription, Jewelcrafting, Leatherworking, Mining, and Tailoring all with 4 copies of the profession.
Picking up the rear are Blacksmithing and Skinning with only 2 copies each. With Skinning you only really need one each as it doesn't have any real value beyond being able to get cheap mats once and a while.
Blacksmithing seems a bit thin with only two and I may shuffle around a few things later if I decide I need more Blacksmiths.
That New Professions Smell!
As far as what I added to my professions roster, the top profession additions were Alchemy, Engineering, and Jewelcrafting with 3 new copies each.
In the (again) long middle I we have Herbalism, Leatherworking, Mining, Skinning, and Tailoring all adding 2 copies each.
I only added one copy of Blacksmithing, Enchanting and Inscription.
I think from the addition numbers above you can see that I seem to be leaning heavily on Alchemy and Engineering for their cooldown strength.
Jewelcrafting is up there likely due to the need for it on the Horde and my need to diversify in order to capitalize on profession-specific gold-making opportunities as the arise.
Conclusion
What have I learned from planning out these 22 new profession slots?
For the most part I'm sticking with what I know as far as gold-making from professions. Having more slots will mainly be used to bulk up my profession roster on the Horde side and enhance strong cooldowns with more copies.
Is this plan set in stone? Not really. At this point it's just a plan but as I start to level my characters it will be nice to be able to have their professions all planned out and ready to go.
Below is the final chart showing all of my current and planned profession slots. Look at it in all it's multi-colored glory and behold the madness that is the mind of a gold-maker.
Server | Faction | Class | Prof 1 | Prof 2 |
Main | Alliance | Warrior | Jewelcrafting | Blacksmithing |

For the horde side, if you use a Tauren as druid they get extra speed in herbalism, thus making gathering faster, and more efficient due to not needing to dismount. There is ofcourse the sky golem mount that allows you to herb whilst mounted. My main is a tauren druid though, and I love the extra gathering speed. Dive in, pluck, fly off :)
ReplyDeleteFor me it's always a choice between pure mount speed of Paladins and Death Knights and the gathering speed of Druids and Tauren Druids. Most times I choose mount speed because I think it ultimately saves more time.
Deleteif you could get your hands on http://www.wowhead.com/item=86566 rare drop would almost be instant herb gathering.
ReplyDeleteas for the professions i think 4 each: tailor leatherworker blacksmith would increase gold income, because their values are still high and will continue so until next patch since 553 ilvl is great for boosting alt's ilvl. also getting 2 gathering professions on same character would yield more mats. if you logged in to farm some ores on your way you could grab couple of stacks of herbs. thus leaving your crafters in towns and throwing gatherers into the wild.
Great points. Love those gloves (but sadly MoP areas only). If you look above I have dual gathering planned for my new Pally and Death Knight.

ReplyDeleteHi Jim, firstly having a dedicated paladin herbing/mining on each faction is a great idea, especially with the land-only mounts allowable untll the first patch of the new xpac kicks in. I have done the same on my accounts and expect to make a ton of gold in the first 1-2 months doing this. Regarding the remaining proffs, I'd make sure that at least on prof is covered(if needed, but not my own preference) on each faction, with the balance skewed towards inscription/alchemy for eraly and middle-to late game cooldowns. My personal opinion, and the way i have aligned 8 of my own 11 faction toons is to go pure alc/inscription. The remaining 3 toons are 1-herbing/mining on a palla/dk( i have a dk and palla albeit on different servers) and 2&3- mixture of tailoring/jc/bs/eng on a second and third toon for the "fun" factor as well as farming cloth.
DeleteYes. I made sure I had all 11 profs covered on both factions.
