My Current Gold-Making Roster Of Characters
With Connected Realms (possibly) coming my way the idea of adding 11 more characters is becoming a real possibility. With that in mind I thought I'd take some time today to go over my current gold-making roster of characters.
I'll be breaking the info into three main sections: professions, cooldowns and general gold-making activities. In doing so I hope to expose a bit more information about my own personal gold-making techniques. Read on for more.
An Introduction
For today's post I will be focusing on my my current 11 level 90 characters on my main server. My characters are spread across both factions with the majority (8 out of the 11) residing on the Alliance.
(While I'll be focusing a bit more on faction with I discuss gold-making activities, faction does play a somewhat of a role in choosing professions.)
Professions
Below is a chart listing the professions for all 11 of my characters.
I've also broken the professions into rough categories based on their general function (creation, consumables, misc, and gathering) the reasoning being that each category of profession makes gold in slightly different ways.
Character Professions
Creation | Consumable | Misc | Gathering
BS | Tail | LW | JC | Ench | Alch | Insc | Eng | Herb | Mine | Skin | Fact
Hunter | X | X | A | |||||||||
Shaman | X | X | A | |||||||||
Warrior | X | X | A | |||||||||
Mage | X | X | A | |||||||||
Druid | X | X | A | |||||||||
Priest | X | X | A | |||||||||
Warlock | X | X | A | |||||||||
Death Knight | X | X | A | |||||||||
Rogue | X | X | H | |||||||||
Paladin | X | X | H | |||||||||
Monk | X | X | H |
From the chart above you can see that, while I have all of the professions covered, it is interesting thing to note is which professions I have multiples of.
- Professions I have only 1 copy of:
- Inscription
- Jewelcrafting
- Blacksmithing
- Skinning
- Professions I have 2 copies of (due to profession benefit):
- Tailoring
- Leatherworking
- Engineering
- Professions I have 2 copies of (due to faction need):
- Mining
- Herbalism
- Professions I have 4 copies of:
- Alchemy
- Enchanting
Looking at the professions listed above a few things may stand out as odd.
Four enchanters? Really? Yes. I had extra profession slots I was able to free up to make an enchanter of every armor type (cloth, leather, mail, and plate) so that I could disenchant all the epic tokens I received from the Timeless Isle into Sha Crystals. Will this remain viable? Time will tell.
I have gatherers on each faction that could have been put to better use if all my characters were on the same faction but as it is I need gatherers on both sides.
Mining may be a bit more needed than Herbalism due to its ability to smelt ore into bars for things like Alchemy cooldowns but I still like the option of gathering herbs myself if I need to.
I should also state that some of the professions above are where they are due to legacy concerns. Some of my characters have had professions since Vanilla and it's hard to see them with different professions.
I've tried changing long-time professions in the past and ended up going back to their original professions because it just "felt right".
Cooldowns
With 11 characters I have a lot of daily profession cooldowns available. Below is a chart showing what cooldowns I have access to on a daily basis.
(It should be noted that at the moment my Engineering cooldowns are the most important due to the possibility of build Sky Golems. After that Living Steel is important than the rest.)
24 Hour Profession Cooldowns
Creation | Consumable | Misc
BS | Tail | LW | JC | Alch | Insc | Eng | Fact
Hunter | X | A | ||||||
Shaman | X | A | ||||||
Warrior | X | X | A | |||||
Mage | X | X | A | |||||
Druid | X | A | ||||||
Priest | X | A | ||||||
Warlock | X | X | A | |||||
Death Knight | A | |||||||
Rogue | X | H | ||||||
Paladin | X | H | ||||||
Monk | X | H | ||||||
Cooldowns | 1 | 2 | 2 | 1 | 4 | 1 | 2 | |
Total Cooldowns: 13 |
As you can see from above I have 13 possible profession cooldowns I can perform on a daily basis.
Even if each one only took 2 minutes (loggging in, gathering materials, doing the cooldown, logging out, etc.) it would take me nearly 30 mins to do them all.
In addition, the some professions (like Tailoring, Blacksmithing, and Leatherworking) teach you a random pattern that you can then make and sell as well which also takes time.
I do tend to do all of my cooldowns each day I play and I've gotten fairly efficient at "getting in and getting out" with characters who only do cooldowns. I also try to make sure they have the materials they need each day.
Just as a fun side note the following is the total materials I use on a daily basis to complete all of my profession cooldowns:
- Bolts of Windwool Cloth x 20 (or 100 Windwool Cloth)
- Tailoring: Celestial Cloth x 2
- Exotic Leather x 40
- Leatherworking: Magnificence of Leather x 2
- Serpent's Eye x 3
- Jewelcrafting: Serpent's Heart
- Trillium Bar x 25
- Blacksmithing: Balanced Trillium Ingot
- Alchemy: Living Steel x 4
- Ghost Iron Bar x 20
- Engineering: Jard's Peculiar Energy Source x 2
- Ink of Dreams x3
- Inscription: Scroll of Wisdom
I decided to look up the material value for all of the above mats on my server's page on The Undermine Journal and I came up with the following daily costs for doing my cooldowns.
- Bolts of Windwool Cloth: 23g ea x 20 = 460g
- Exotic Leather: 3g ea. x 40 = 120g
- Serpent's Eye: 21g ea. x 3 = 63g
- Trillium Bar: 53g ea. x 25 = 1,325g
- Ghost Iron Bar: 5.75g ea. x 20 = 115g
- Ink of Dreams: 6g x 3 = 18g
- Total: 2,101g
Over 2000g per day for daily cooldowns? Yup. Although I do receive more for the items created from the cooldowns which is why I do them.
General Gold-Making Activities
For the last chart I broke my characters down by what types of gold-making activities they perform regularly.
General Gold-Making Activities
Profession Cooldowns | Prof Item Sales | Item Flipping | Misc Item Sales | Faction
Hunter | X | X | X | A | |
Shaman | X | X | A | ||
Warrior | X | X | A | ||
Mage | X | X | A | ||
Druid | X | A | |||
Priest | X | X | A | ||
Warlock | X | A | |||
Death Knight | X | A | |||
Rogue | X | X | X | X | H |
Paladin | X | X | H | ||
Monk | X | H |
From this chart you can see that I a quite a fan of profession cooldowns. I also sell many of the items created by those professions (mainly Malevolent PVP gear).
I also called out the factions a bit more here because you can see that, due to having only 3 characters on the Horde side, my rogue performs almost all of the auctioning herself whereas on the Alliance I can spread it out a bit.
Also of note is that all of my item flipping (mostly 82-84 MoP items) are handled by just two characters. In the past I have had up to 4 characters flipping items, each with their own markets, but as the markets have slowed I've moved out of them.
As far as the "Misc Item Sales" those mostly consis of characters clearing out guild banks or selling odd items like pets, etc.
Conclusion
So there's small glimpse into how I have my characters set up for gold-making and what they do on a regular basis to make gold.
While the above set up works for me (at least right now) it isn't the "end-all be-all" of how to set up gold-making.
Each gold-maker's set up is unique and every one does things just a bit differently. We each find our own way to get things accomplished.
There's also a chance that if/when my realm is connected and I have access to 11 new alts some of the above may change which would be fine as I'm always looking for way to increase efficiency and ease-of-use in my gold-making.
