Preliminary Caged Battle Pet Pricing Data
In my continuing effort to understand and assess the feasibility of working in the cross-realm battle pet sales market I've been doing some data collection and analysis. I thought I'd share some of that research with all of you today.
As many of you may know there currently isn't any way to look up caged battle pet pricing on auction house data sites like The Undermine Journal and WoWuction. This leaves it up to each player to collect and analyze the data themselves. Head past the jump for some of the average prices I've seen for certain battle pets.
The Method
The battle pets that I have been recording data from come from the post Buy Battle Pets On One Server, Sell On Another where Kaexo shared their picks for battle pets they sold cross-realm most often.
Also if you want to collect data like this yourself you can make it much easier by using this Auctionator Shopping List For Battle Pets.
The data that makes up this pricing average was taken from around 8 different server/factions. The data represented 4 days worth of prices. The servers chosen were servers I currently had enough gold on to be able to work the battle pet market.
I used the help of my Starter Edition level 1 characters to collect a lot of this data. If you'd like to create your own be sure to read Build Auction House Spies With Eternally Free "Starter Edition" Accounts.
A Warning
As with an sort of data please take the averages below as just one point of data. While they are the average of a good amount of data and give a general idea of what each of these pets may go for there can be huge variations in pricing from one server to the next.
Don't take this data as the "gospel" of pricing for these pets. I am simply providing it as a thumbnail look at what prices I've seen the the pets for on the servers I've been watching prices on.
The Average Prices
Below is the average price for the following pets. Feel free to use it as a rough guide line for pricing for pets. A guide so you don't pay too much or too little when trying to flip pets across realms.
Your server may vary in pricing but averaging multiple server/factions together helps smooth out the data.

Profitable?
So is cross-realm battle pet sales profitable? I don't know yet. I'm just getting my feet wet but I can say that I've been able to find some great deals on pets (3 Pengus for 26g each is one example) by searching across multiple servers each day.
I was also able to look over my data and find the cheapest possible servers to purchase the 12 pets I needed to get the Raiding With Leashes achievement.
(As a side note you can get achievement credit for the pet and then re-cage it and you still get credit towards Mr. Bigglesworth. April and I both got Mr. Bigglesworth from the same set of 12 pets.)
Conclusion
I have to say I've had tons of fun getting into this market. The day may come where the auction data websites will start to work and we'll be able to get pricing data from there but until then we do what we have to do to (hopefully) make a profit.
As with any new market we are all making this up as we go along. I hope the above data helps you if you choose to jump into this market.

That's a great list Jim, I'll be on the lookout for some bargains.
ReplyDeleteI guess it's not surprising to find the phoenix hatchling so low. I assume I'm not the only person that had one on most alts before the change.
I find posting pets a complete pain, so just haven't gotten into the market at all yet... Not even to unload my own excess pets. What process do you use to sell pets?
As far as the technical aspects of posting both Auctionator and TSM (with "Ignore Random Enchants check in Groups Overrides) allow posting them quickly.
DeleteAs far as when and in my case where (which server) to sell I record prices across all the servers I'm watching and then look for the highest price and/or gaps in the market (ie. servers that don't currently have the pet listed).
If I was selling off duplicates I might add them into my Auctionator shopping list and check as above for them.
In it's simplest form all it takes is caging the pets and using Auctionator to post them like a normal item.
It's nice to see additional data, instead of just my own. I use The Undermine Journal frequently, but like you said... there are no numbers for battle pets yet. The lack of information out there is actually what really interests me. Very few people are willing to spend the time and really get down to the nitty gritty and work for their data.
ReplyDeleteWebsites with massive records to thumb through are great, but the idea that every person out there has the same information makes things less exciting. Addons like NPCScanner that mark every existing rare spawn with alerts really takes away from the true rarity of the mobs. I remember when I was playing beta 8 years ago and would come across a silver elite framed mob. That really got me excited.
Don't get me wrong, I love NPCScanner and I use it all the time, but there's just something about the unknown that's exciting, whether it's a new expansion or just a version update. It's the same unknown feeling I get when I open a chest or kill a NPC that has a chance to drop something rare.
That excitement brings me back to my younger years when I collected X-Men cards, haha. I would ask my parents to shell out $200 for a big box as my only gift at Christmas. I would slowly open each packet wondering if I would get a "special" card and if I did, would it be the one I needed to finish the 3x3 holographic card scene?
I suppose this is part of what may be driving you to gather this data too. It may or may not be persistently/consistently profitable down the road, but the excitement of being one of the first to enter this market makes the risk worth it to me. It reminds me of the speculation for the 4.3 transmog market. No one knew for sure if and how profitable it would be. I remember buying up Teebu's Blazing Longsword every time I saw them on Illidan's AH for under 50k. 4.3 hit and those flipped for 150-200k in no time. It was a risk that paid off.
I appreciate you taking the time to really investigate this market. I know one thing for sure, though. The players that can afford these battle pets at premium prices are also the players with alts with no need to buy a battle pet more than once. I think what will actually end up killing this market is the same thing that has created it: the first and only true cross-realm market. Once the market grows, people will catch on fast on how to find pets cheaper on other realms. All they have to do is find someone on a different realm to trade a small amount of gold with. Both players then have access to multiple auction houses and can shop around throughout the entire would as opposed to just their own realm. I guess what I'm trying to say is, this market will probably be similar to the .COM bubble. The whole idea that made it big and profitable is what ultimately killed it.

ReplyDeleteThanks for the link. It appears what you linked to are regular non-caged pets.
DeleteThe issue is it that you can't search for pets that have been caged with the pet battle system.
