AOE Looting's Effect On The Cloth Markets


After doing a Black Rock Depths run on my 85 I ended up with Runecloth. A lot of Runecloth. Indeed the AOE looting system that was introduced in Patch 5.0.4 has made running old instances much quicker. If you don't have to bend down to loot every mob you can simply round up a whole bunch of groups, AOE them down and click once to loot them all.

That wasn't what caught my attention. What caught my attention was the prices for Runecloth on my server which seemed far lower than I remembered. Read on past the jump for a bit of analysis on how AOE looting is changing the face of the cloth markets as we know them.

So how have the cloth markets changed since patch 5.0.4? Let's do a bit of digging at our favorite market research site The Undermine Journal. The results should be interesting.

Linen Cloth

Conclusions

So, what are we to take from all this number crunching? Suffice it to say that in the last month the supply of every single type cloth in the game has increased and the price of each has decreased.

Is this due to AOE looting? It is very likely as the charts above indicate the the increase in cloth sales started right after the patch on August 28, 2012.

If this trend continues can we expect a future of cheap and plentiful cloth? How should we adjust to these changes in the cloth supply? How can we make gold from it?

    I believe this is the additive effect of end of expansion alt leveling, AoE looting, and OpenRaid. Now if only I could explain the idiots on my realm dumping glyphs at 20g...

      20g? Be happy - a lot of glyphs on my realm are going for less than 10. >_< I'm buying most of the under-5g-ones for reselling in the hopes that this madness won't last.

    Cheaper cloth could make the Enchanting shuffle via tailoring more cost effective.

    my question is going to be whether the demand for cloth items (bags, specialized armor sets) are going to outstrip the added cloth on the market.

    I'm still banking the power levelers and the bag market (both netherweave and Imbued Netherweave) will more than make up for the excess cloth. if the cloth had doubled or tripled in availability then I might be sweating a little bit more.

    I don't think it is AoE looting alone. Before the end of every expac you always see materials dive. Current level materials lose appeal as people don't need them anymore and try to rid themselves of stock and lower level materials lower in price because of the alt-influx.

    AOE looting is not the problem here. The problem here is that the droprates of the old system have not been reviewed and modified to accomodate AOE looting. I'm quite sure some nerfs will be issued here and there to even out the clothmarket. (I farm over a 1000 embersilk/frostweave/netherweave cloth per hour legitemately and i'm sure this wasn't meant to be)

    I think it is the psychological aspect of AoE looting. AoE looting saves you a few minutes, a non-trivial but not game changing benefit %-wise if you consider the total time of getting to the instance and clearing it. I think it is the "AOE-looting will be good for farming" that people have been taking about and end of expac that mean more people are doing it.
